Windows 11: How To Disable Startup Apps

For all the new features of Windows 11, one annoying feature has been carried over from its predecessor. Every time you download a new app, the developer has the option to open it every time you turn on your PC or laptop.

That might not be a problem if you always have Chrome or File Explorer open, but does every session immediately need something like Spotify or Microsoft Teams? For most people, the answer is no.

Unfortunately, many applications set default settings to automatically launch on startup. To prevent this from happening, you’ll have to manually disable the feature on an app-by-app basis. However, there are three relatively simple ways to do it in Windows 11.

How to disable Windows 11 startup apps in Settings

This is definitely the easiest way to control which apps open at startup:

  1. Open settings
  2. Select ‘Applications’ from the left pane
  3. In this section select ‘Startup’

  4. You should now see a list of all the apps that can be configured to start when you sign in. By default, these apps are sorted by name, but you can change this to startup status or impact
  5. Just click the toggle next to something you want to disable and the changes will automatically be applied

As you might expect, the same process can be used to allow specific applications to run at startup. However, even disabled apps can still start minimized or run in the background. If this is the problem, the following steps should help:

  1. Open Settings, then open ‘Apps’ again
  2. This time, click ‘Installed Apps’

  3. Click the three dots next to an app you don’t want running in the background
  4. If the option is available, select ‘Advanced options’. Otherwise, this app is not capable of running in the background

  5. Under ‘Background app permissions’ you’ll see a dropdown marked ‘Allow this app to run in the background’. Click here then select ‘Never’

How to Disable Windows 11 Startup Applications in Task Manager

If you don’t want to go that route, Task Manager is also an effective way to disable startup applications. The process here is exactly the same as in Windows 10:

  1. Click the search icon next to the Start menu
  2. Type ‘task manager’ and select the relevant option
  3. This can open showing only the apps you are currently open. If so, click ‘More details’
    Windows 11 disables startup applications
  4. Next, click the tab at the top of the window marked ‘Startup’
  5. You’ll see a list of all the apps you’ve installed, with the status ‘Enabled’ or ‘Disabled’ next to them. If it was the former, right click and select ‘Disable’

How to disable Windows 11 startup applications in the Start-up folder

The third and final method involves the Start-up folder, found in File Explorer. Some apps automatically put them there once downloaded, instructing Windows 11 to run them every time it boots. However, these files can be safely deleted without negatively affecting your device:

  1. Click the search icon next to the Start menu
  2. Type ‘run’ and open relevant results
  3. Enter the command ‘shell:startup’ and click ‘OK’ to open the Start-up folder in File Explorer

  4. Select any file you see here, then click the trash can icon to delete it. If you don’t see anything, you will need to follow one of the other methods
  5. Click ‘Yes’ to confirm

For all of these methods, your changes will be automatically applied. There’s no need to restart your device, although you may want to check for apps that don’t run at startup anymore.
