Router Login: How to Access & Change Settings

If you want to change your home Wi-Fi password, network name, or any other setting, you’ll need to sign in to your router.

And to do that, you need to know its IP address. You can find that using the ipconfig tool in Windows which we will explain below. You can also find out its IP address on your phone by going through the Wi-Fi details, again we will show you how below.

On top of that, you’ll almost certainly need your router’s admin password. Most routers have this printed on the label or even a removable card for convenience.

If someone has changed the default router password, you’ll need to ask them for that password or reset the router to factory settings.

If you cannot access your router over Wi-Fi for some reason, connect an Ethernet cable between your router and computer or laptop.

Find your router’s IP address in Windows

First, open a command prompt by typing ‘command’ in the Start menu search box and selecting Command Prompt.

Or just press the Windows key on your keyboard at the same time as ‘R’, then type ‘cmd’ then press Enter.

In the new window that opens, type ‘ipconfig’ and press Enter. You will see a list of network adapters in your PC.

Go through the info to find the number next to Default Gateway. You can have multiple adapters, but only one should be connected to your router, so only one will have a string of numbers.

These numbers are your router’s IP address.

Find your router's IP address on Android or iOS

In iOS, open the Settings app and then:

  1. Tap Wi-Fi
  2. Make sure your phone is connected to your router’s Wi-Fi network
  3. Tap the ‘i’ to the right of the network name
  4. Your router’s IP address is displayed next to ‘Router’

In Android, the settings menus vary between phones, but when you find the Wi-Fi settings:

  1. Make sure your phone is connected to your router’s Wi-Fi network
  2. Click on the network name
  3. Look for ‘gateway’, ‘router’ or other entry in the list.

Unfortunately, some phones don’t list the router’s IP address, so you’ll have to use another device to find it. Again, you can try looking at the stickers on the router itself or in its manual for the default address.

Log in to the router

Log in to the router

Armed with the router’s IP address, open a web browser and type the default port number in the address bar, then press Enter. Do not add http:// before the IP address.

Common router IP addresses are

  • 192.168.0.1
  • 192.168.1.254 (BT Family Center)
  • 192.168.1.1

In rare cases, you may need to add a colon and port number at the end (such as 192.168.0.1:443), but most home routers won’t need this.

You should now see the login screen for your router.

You will likely be asked for an administrative password to make any changes to your router’s settings. This will be printed on the router, but if you’ve changed it, enter that password instead (or, if you don’t know, you’ll have to reset all settings – see instructions below).

If there is no password, you will need to factory reset the router by following the manufacturer’s instructions. (We provide general guidance below.)

If you don’t see the login screen, it may be because the IP address of the gateway was entered manually in your network adapter settings.

To check, open the Windows Control Panel (not the new Settings app) and search for ‘network’. Click View network connections in the Network and Sharing Center.

Right-click the adapter you use to connect to the internet (usually a wireless or Ethernet adapter for PCs) and select Properties.

Then scroll down the list to find Internet Protocol Version 4. Click it and then click the Properties button.

Make sure that Get IP Address Automatically is selected and also Get DNS Server Address Automatically.

Now repeat the previous steps to see if this has fixed the problem.

Reset your router username and password

Reset your router username and password

If you forgot your router’s username and password, you need to reset it to factory settings. This is usually achieved by pressing a button or inserting a paper clip or pin into the reset hole.

Note: Before doing this, keep in mind that you will lose any settings you’ve made and may have to re-enter your username and broadband details if you don’t have a backup. However, it’s not a big deal if you have those details.

Check your manual for how long you hold the button down to reset it. The router will need to be connected to mains power and turned on for this to work.

After resetting the router, you can follow the previous steps to connect to the router’s management interface.

If the reason you’re accessing your router’s settings is to configure your Wi-Fi network, you can now do so. You should change the Wi-Fi network name to something easy to remember, but the most important thing is to set a password.

If possible, choose WPA2 or WPA3 security instead of WEP.

While you’re at it, change the password for your router’s interface to prevent anyone else from accessing your router settings.

Label your router so you don’t forget your IP address, Wi-Fi password, router username, and password.

Additional check

If you still cannot connect to your router, make sure that any software firewalls are disabled. This could be part of your antivirus or internet security software, or a standalone app like ZoneAlarm.

Temporarily disable these options to see if they cause problems. Windows’ built-in firewall should not cause problems.

Also, check for other software, such as parental control apps that can prevent you from accessing certain websites – the router’s settings interface is just a web page.

There may also be a setting in your web browser that is causing the problem so try a different browser to eliminate this as a problem.
