Last year, Euro 2020 was destined to kick off a bumper sports summer until the coronavirus intervened. The pandemic-induced lockdowns across Europe prompted UEFA to postpone the tournament for a year, but it still takes place in various locations across the continent.
Portugal are the holders, having defied the odds to upset host France five years ago. However, both will not make it to the finals this time, both losing in the round of 16. Other candidates such as Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands and Germany also did not compete.
Incredibly, England were one of only two teams to have reached the final. It was their first time at a major tournament in 55 years, and we all know what happened in 1966. After a comfortable but uneven group stage, the Three Lions showed themselves. in competition with a 0-2 defeat to Germany, before overtaking Ukraine in the quarters. The semi-final against Denmark was much more difficult, but England eventually took the lead after Harry Kane’s goal in extra time.
However, they will face Italy, who are currently on a 32-match unbeaten streak. Roberto Mancini’s side beat Spain on penalties in the semi-finals, and have won all six matches so far. The Azzurri have won the World Cup four times, but will want to add to their lone 1968 success at the Euros. Find out more in our separate guide to when England play next.
Here’s everything you need to know, including how to watch from where you are.
What is Euro 2020?
Euro 2020, also known as the UEFA European Football Championship, is the 16th edition of the men’s football tournament that took place every four years from 1960 to 2016.
The pandemic means the fixture schedule has had to be adjusted slightly, although UEFA still calls this year’s competition ‘Euro 2020’.
All 55 UEFA member countries had a chance to qualify for the event, but only 24 teams made it to the final round.
Portugal are the reigning Euro 2016 champions, but they or any other country hosting the matches are not automatically included in the tournament.
Previous winners include Spain (1964, 2008, 2012), Greece (2004), France (1984, 2000), Denmark (1992), Netherlands (1988), Germany (1972, 1980, 1996), then Czechoslovakia (1976), Italy (1968) and the Soviet Union (1960), but never Britain. We finished third in 1968 and third in 1996, so it’s time for England to take it home.

The long wait for the tournament to start is over. Euro 2020 starts on Friday, June 11, 2021with 51 matches played between then and the final on Sunday, July 11, 2021.
