How to use Facebook Reactions

A year ago we reported that Facebook rolled out its React feature, allowing you to use buttons for Love, Haha, Wow, Sad, and Angry when a Like doesn’t cut it. Now that feature is also coming to Messenger and rolling out on iOS now. You can add an emoji to a message just by holding it and selecting one.

How to use Facebook Reactions

Facebook Reactions works in exactly the same way as the Like button used to, which is both good and bad. Also see: Best Facebook Tips and Tricks.

Pros: They are very easy to use. You tap the Like button to access Reactions, and if you later change your mind, you can tap it again to recall your support. Facebook will display the three most popular Reactions below each post.

It’s now much easier to figure out what to do when you want to show support for a post but don’t want to appear gross. For example, you’re not really glad that your best friend’s cat is dead – are you? You can now choose a different Reaction (we recommend the Sad button).

The bad: If you empathize with a lot of sad posts or express anger over a lot of unhappy posts, you’ll see more of those types of content in your News Feed the same way Facebook does. shows you more of the type of post you like.

Facebook Reactions Mobile

Facebook has also rolled out Reactions to Android and iOS, and if you can’t access the feature yet, you should make sure you’re using the latest version of the app – check if an update is available at the App Store or Google Play or not.

If you’re using the latest version and still don’t see React, try closing and reopening the Facebook app.

On your iPhone or iPad, you can double-tap the Home button to bring up your open apps, then swipe the Facebook app up from the top of the screen to close it. Now relaunch the Facebook app from the Home screen.

On an Android phone or tablet, bring up your multitasking menu (achieved by pressing or pressing and holding one of the three buttons below the screen – in the case of our Samsung Galaxy S6 you tap the button on the side left of the Home button ) and swipe the Facebook app away from the edge of the screen. Now relaunch Facebook in the usual way.

To add a Reaction to a Facebook post, find a reaction you’d like to express, then press and hold the Like button. Six Similar Reactions will pop up and you just have to tap on the right reaction. If you just tap the Like button, it will work the same as before and you will only Like that post.
