How to use emoji on Mac

If a picture is worth a thousand words, how many words is an emoji worth? Emojis are becoming ubiquitous in our digital world, helping to express emotions in texts, tweets, and even selfies on sites like Instagram and Snapchat. It’s easy to access emojis on iOS and Android, but what about on Mac?

While it’s not as intuitive as your iPhone, you can access hundreds of emojis through your Mac. Work email will never be the same again! 🏻

How to Access Emojis on Mac

It may not be obvious at first glance, but there are several ways to access emojis on your Mac.

Movies off

The most convenient way to access the emoji picker on your Mac is through a keyboard shortcut:

  1. Place the cursor where you want to insert the emoji in the text window (be it a tweet, in a note, or even in Photoshop).
  2. On your keyboard, press Command + Control + Spacebar to access the emoji selector.
  3. Browse and click the emoji you want to use to insert it.

As with iOS, emojis are divided into various categories including Emojis & People, Animals & Nature, and Objects, but if you have one particular emoji in mind, you can also use the search bar to try and find it. The emoji’s name doesn’t always match what it describes, but it should work most of the time. 🏻‍♂️

While it’s mainly for emojis, you can also use this method to access less frequently used symbols.

If you can’t seem to remember your keyboard combination for quick access to the emoji picker, you always have the option of adding it to the Menu bar at the top of your Mac.

  1. Click the Apple icon at the top left of your Mac screen.
  2. Click System Preferences.
  3. Select Keyboard.
  4. Check the option box next to ‘Show keyboard and emoji viewer in Menu Bar’.

You should now see an emoji picker icon next to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other macOS icons at the top right of the screen. Just click it whenever you want to insert an emoji.

Touch Bar on MacBook Pro

If you want a more iOS-like experience, you can always use the MacBook Pro with the Touch Bar. The technology was first introduced in 2017 and essentially provides users with a contextual bar of functionality that will change depending on the application.

Conveniently, if you’re composing a message in Mail or Messages, you’ll see an emoji button appear on the Touch Bar. Just tap the icon and scroll through to find your desired emoji.

Admittedly not a good reason to drop at least £1,299 / AU$1,299 on a 13-inch MacBook Pro, but if you’re considering buying one, it’s a nice added bonus.
