If we’re honest with ourselves, we spend way too many hours staring at our phone and computer screens – often close to bedtime. The blue light emitted by those glowing rectangles can cause problems. Various studies have found that this particular area of the light spectrum can stimulate your brain to think it’s already morning and therefore it’s time for you to wake up.
Of course, the most logical solution would be to simply put those devices aside and read a good book or something similar to relax, but most of us are irrational. Luckily, there’s always a helping hand if you want to continue that late-night doomsday work, here’s how you can use a blue light filter to protect your circadian rhythm.
How to use blue light filter in Windows 10 (Night Light)
The blue light filter in Windows 10 is called Night Light. This is a useful resource as it not only removes blue light from your screen, but it can also be scheduled to turn on and off at certain times of the day. Here’s what to do if you want to set up Night Light on your Windows 10 PC.
Open the Start menu and select Settings > System > Display > Night Light Settings.
Here you will see options to turn the feature on immediately, a bar where you set the strength of the effect, along with a Schedule section to decide when you want it to automatically turn on and off.
To check how it looks, click Turn it on now button. The screen will change from white to pinkish cream. Slide the Strength bar up and down when increasing or decreasing the effect, but keep in mind that you’ll want it to be moderately intense so your sleep is protected.
When you are satisfied with this setting, you can leave it as is or click Schedule night lighting switch button. It will then open two more options: Sunset to dawn or Set time. Choose which one suits your taste, then the Night Light feature will become automatic. If you want to turn it off, just go back to this page and uncheck Schedule night lighting and make sure you click Turn off now button.
How to use a blue light filter on a Mac (Night Shift)
As with the iPhones and iPads we cover below, Apple has a similar blue light filter available on its Macs. It only works on models from 2012 onwards (in most cases) that have a built-in display or use very specific Apple or LG devices. You can find more details on the Apple Support page.
To enable this feature, open System Preferences > Monitor and choose Night shift navigation. From there, you can set the auto-on and off time, plus the strength of the effect.
How to use blue light filter on iPhone and iPad (Night Shift)
On Apple mobile devices, the blue light filter is found in the Night Shift settings. To enable this feature, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Night Shiftwhere you will find all available options.

How to use blue light filter on Android
Most Android phones have a built-in blue light filter that you usually find in the Display section of Settings. For example, on Samsung Galaxy S9, you can enable this feature by going to Settings> Display and turn on Blue light filter right to buy.
On Honor and Huawei phones, it’s called Eye Comfort. On the Google Pixel, it’s called Night Light.
If you don’t see this setting on your phone, launch the Google Play Store and search for Blue Light Filter. You’ll see a wide range of apps, with some of the more popular being Twilight and Blue Light Filter – Night Mode, Night Shift.
