If you’re running low on space on your Mac or just want to remove software you don’t use, you’ll want to know how to remove apps. People coming from a Windows background will look for uninstallation wizards, but you won’t find them on Apple computers. So here’s what to do if you want to uninstall apps on your Mac.
How do I remove unwanted programs from my Mac?
Send Mac apps to the trash
For most cases, all it takes to uninstall an app is to go to the Applications folder and drag the app’s icon/folder to the trash or right-click (two-finger click) go to the app and select Go to Bins.
Some apps have an uninstaller, so be sure to check the folder first to see if it contains a file called Uninstaller or similar.
With the app in the trash folder, right-click (or two-finger click) the trash and select Empty box to remove it from your system.
Remove Mac apps with Launchpad
Launchpad is a shortcut to the apps installed on your Mac. You can access it by clicking the F4 key or by performing a finger-and-thumb grabbing motion on the trackpad.
This will bring up a grid of icons showing all the apps available to you. Press and hold the Option key (it’s also the left Alt key) and the app logos will start to wobble. Anything that can be uninstalled from Launchpad will show in its top left corner a circle with a cross inside it.
Click here and then select Remove from the menu that appears to remove the app.
Can I delete Mac apps manually?
While most applications are self-contained, some places support files in a few other directories, and they may be left out using the above methods. The directories where you can find this file are ~ / Library / Preferences, ~/Library/Application Supportand ~/Library/Application Support.
To access these, you will need to show the Library folder, as macOS will hide it by default. To do this, go to Finder, click To go in the Menu bar at the top of the screen, then press and hold the Option key. The Library an option will now appear, allowing you to select it and access the data inside.
Next, find the app-related folders and drag them to the Bin. That will remove all traces of the software from your system.
