How to Turn off NFC: Remove the N Symbol from your Phone

The top bar on your Android phone doesn’t just tell you the time, signal strength, and remaining battery life. The notification bar can also let you know when an email has arrived, a download is in progress, and when Bluetooth is on. One symbol that you may not immediately recognize is the N symbol, although this is becoming increasingly rare on modern phones.

What does the symbol N mean?

The ornate N is there to let you know that your phone now has NFC enabled. NFC, or Near Field Communication, is a technology that allows devices to exchange information simply by placing them side by side. Smartphones use NFC to transfer photos, contacts, or any other data you specify between NFC-enabled handsets.

You may have encountered NFC if you paid for public transport with an Oyster card or used tap to pay with your bank card for your morning coffee. And it’s the method used by mobile payment services like Android Pay and Samsung Pay.

How to disable NFC?

It’s actually quite simple. Depending on the version of Android you’re running, you might find the option there in the quick settings pull-down menu. To access this feature, simply slide your finger down from the top of the screen and a grid of icons will appear, with settings for Wifi, Bluetooth, and a few more. If you see an N icon, with NFC underneath, tap it so it’s grayed out and NFC is disabled.

If it’s not in the quick settings menu, you’ll need to tap the gear icon at the top of the screen or open the app drawer and find the Settings icon, then select Connected devices > Connection options. Inside, you’ll see a toggle switch for NFC. Click here to turn off the feature.
