How to temporarily turn off the laptop keyboard

  1. Go into your Start Menu and type Device Manager
  2. Open Device Manager and find your way to Keyboard and tap its left arrow

The keyboard will now temporarily disable work until you have to restart your laptop, but when you turn it back on, it will automatically reinstall the drivers for your keyboard. If you want to permanently disable the keyboard, we have a solution for that below.

  1. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your laptop by going to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices

  3. Back on your laptop, click ‘Add Bluetooth or other device’ and then click ‘Bluetooth’
  4. It will now search for your device and with a little luck you will find the keyboard. Just click on it to complete the connection

How to permanently disable laptop keyboard

If you want to permanently disable the keyboard on your laptop, you’ll need a little more. You will have to turn off Windows’ ability to automatically reinstall drivers; otherwise the keyboard will work again every time you reboot the machine.

To permanently disable your keyboard, do the following:

  1. Start and in the search box type ‘gpedit.msc’

  2. Click on the Computer Configuration file then go to Administrative Templates > System, Device Settings
  3. Then go to Device Settings Limits. You will see several options on the right. Right click on Device Settings Pane not described by other policy setting and edit this option, set it to on

Now that you’ve done this, you can return to your Device Manager and follow the steps at the top of this article. Uninstall the driver for your keyboard and when you restart your PC it won’t reinstall automatically and your laptop’s keyboard won’t work anymore.

This is a very permanent change, so there’s one more important step to take if you might want to re-enable the keyboard at any point in the future.

At this point you should go back to gpedit.msc and revert the change so you can reinstall the driver in the future if you want.
