If you just switched from an iPhone or iPad to an Android phone or tablet, you may have music in your iTunes library that you want to listen to on your new device. You can copy music directly with a cable or upload songs to Google Play Music, which lets you stream to any device without taking up storage space.

If you use the first method, the process is quite simple as Android devices can be used just like USB drives. You will need your phone or tablet’s USB cable for this.

Below, we show you how to move music that’s in your iTunes library on your PC or laptop, but if your music is only available on your iPhone or iPad, you’ll need to sync it with your iPhone or iPad first. iTunes or use some third-party software in Windows such as TouchCopy. Unfortunately, unless your Android phone provides an app that will transfer music from your iPhone (unlikely) there is no way to get music directly from your iPhone or iPad.

First, plug your Android phone (or tablet) into your PC. You may need to require your phone to work in MTP mode to transfer files. Every device is different, but something pops up when it’s connected to a PC, and there’s usually a simple option to name it “USB – file transfer”. (If nothing pops up, swipe down from the top of the screen and find the USB notification. Tap it and you’ll see options similar to the one below.)

Next, open a File Explorer window (Windows key + E) on your computer and navigate to the music folder on your phone or tablet. In this case, the location is: This PC > Chris’ G2 > Internal Storage > Music.

If your phone or tablet has an SD card and you want to put music in it, you may see it appear as a separate drive under ‘This computer’.

Open again File Explorer window and find your iTunes music library. By default, this setting is found in: This PC > Music > iTunes > iTunes Media > Music.

With two windows open side by side on your desktop, simply drag and drop music from your iTunes folder into the music folder on your new phone. You can select specific folders or just move things if you have enough free storage space on your device.

How to upload iTunes music to Google Play Music

The above method is the fastest and easiest for most people, but you may want to make your tunes available to multiple devices without using up all of their internal storage.

A good solution is to upload your music to Google Play Music, which is stored in the cloud. This means you’ll need an internet connection to play music, but you can also pin (download) content to local storage for offline listening.

Google Play Music lets you upload massive amounts 50,000 free songs and it’s easy to upload your entire collection using Music Manager.

Follow the steps below to transfer your iTunes library (along with Windows Media or a local folder) to your Android phone using Google Play Music.

First, go to the Google Play Store in a web browser and click Music, then My Music. You will need to sign in with your Google account.

Once you’re in the music section, open the menu on the left with the three lines next to ‘Listen now’ and select Upload music at the bottom.

You’ll be prompted to download Music Manager, but if you already have it, open it up and sign in with your Google account.

Note: if you use Google Chrome, you should download Google Music Manager for Chrome.

Once you’re signed in to Music Manager, select ‘Upload songs to Google Play’ and tap Next.

You can now choose the library or folder you want to upload – for this tutorial we chose iTunes. The music manager will automatically find your library showing the number of songs and playlists available.

You can choose to upload all or selected songs by playlist plus the option to include podcasts.

Click Next and you’ll be asked if you’d like to automatically upload songs that you add to your library in the future, thus keeping iTunes and Google Play Music in sync.

Make your selection, approve the next screen and your music will be uploaded. If you turn off part of your computer, it will automatically resume when you turn it back on.

Note: If you don’t see the options shown above but only the screen below, navigate to the iTunes music folder as explained above and select the folder(s) you want to upload.
