If you’re using an Android phone, you have several ways to buy and download new tunes, but Google Play Music is often one of the easiest because the app comes pre-installed on many phones. Here, we show you how to set a Google Play Music track as your Android ringtone. See also: Best Android phones 2015.
There are two methods to achieve this. If your phone has an SD card, follow the first method; otherwise you will need a PC or Mac to download the file and should follow the second method. See it all
Set a song from Google Play Music as your ringtone – SD card
Step 1. We went into detail about
how to download music to SD card in android, but here’s a quick summary: with your SD card inserted, launch Play Music and click the three horizontal lines in the top left. Select Install. Now scroll down and under Storage Location select External. Now find the tune you want to use as your ringtone and click the down arrow icon to download it to your SD card (we recommend connecting to Wi-Fi first if you have a data contract). whether limited). Note the date and time you downloaded the track as this will make it easier for you to find the track on your phone.
Step 2. To find that song on the SD card, you need a File Manager. If an app is not pre-installed on your phone, go to Google Play, search and download the free File Manager app. Our HTC Desire Eye came with one pre-installed. Launch File Manager and select the SD card. Browse to Android > data > com.google.android.music > files > music. You will find that the files here are uselessly stored with a number as their filename, not the song name. Maybe the file you just downloaded is the only file in the directory; if not, find the most recent file – you can always click on it to listen and check if it’s the correct file.
Step 3. After finding the correct file, tick the checkbox next to it and look for the option to Copy. Tap this, then return to the main File Manager screen and browse to Phone storage > Ringtones. Click Paste to copy the file to this folder.
Step 4. Now when you open Settings, Sounds, Ringtones, you will see this file at the top of the list.
Set a song from Google Play Music as your ringtone – PC or Mac
Step 1. If you don’t have an SD card for your phone, you’ll need to download a track from Google Play Music to your PC or Mac, then move it to your phone’s ringtone folder. In your PC browser, go to
play.google.com/music and select My Library, Songs.
Step 2. Find the track you want, then hover over the line and click the three horizontal dots that appear. Select Download. Select the link to download directly, then click Download now. Note that you can only do this twice per song. The MP3 file will be moved to your download folder.
Step 3. Connect your phone to your PC or Mac using a USB cable. If you’re using a Mac like we are, you’ll need to use
Android File Transfer to view the phone as an attached storage device. Using Windows Explorer or Android File Transfer, click to view your phone’s Internal Storage and open the Ringtones folder. Now just drag and drop the MP3 file into the Ringtones folder.
Step 4. As before, when browsing to Settings, Sounds, Ringtones, you will now find this file (here properly named) in your Ringtones folder.
