Taking a screenshot means you can quickly save information or share it, while capturing it can be useful for a variety of reasons. For example, say your loved one or friend is having a hard time using their Chromebook to perform a basic task. Instead of going up to them and spending an hour or so of your day in an informal tech support role or trying to explain it over the phone, you can create a quick video for them instead. know exactly what to do, then send the video.
Thankfully, as of the ChromeOS 89 update (March 2021), screen recording is now a standard feature. Here’s how to use it.
Where is screen recording on Chromebook?
Google has made it very easy to find and use the new screen recording feature on Chromebooks. Just click on the panel in the bottom right corner where you see the time, battery level and Wi-Fi, then from the panel that appears select Screen capture.
If you prefer to use keyboard shortcuts, press Ctrl + Shift + Show window (a rectangle with two lines to the right) to open the Screen Capture window.
This will then open the Screen Capture menu, which has several different options available.
How to use Screenshot on Chromebook
When you load up the Screen Capture toolbar for the first time, you’ll see that there are several settings for you to choose from. On the left is the button to switch between camera and video. The former captures still images, while the latter captures a video of the screen when you’re using your Chromebook.
To the right of these icons are three more icons that let you choose the area of the screen you’ll capture. From left to right, they represent the entire screen, an area that you select by clicking and dragging your pointer over it, or a specific open window.
Finally, there is the gear icon, at the time of this writing there is only one option to enable or disable microphone recording. Obviously this only applies to video, but can be helpful if you’re trying to talk someone through a process.
How to record screen on Chromebook
Once the toolbar is open and the options are set the way you want, click on the screen (or highlight the area or window you want to record) and ChromeOS will start a short countdown. Once done, you are recording. So use your Chromebook as you want, then when you’re done, you can click the little red circle that now shows up in the taskbar near the time, Wi-Fi, and battery section.
Your image or video is automatically sent to the Pictures or Videos folder (respectively) on your Chromebook, but you can copy or move it to Google Drive or share it directly with others just like the way you would with any other file.
