How To Ride a Hoverboard: Top Tips

Hoverboards became all the rage in 2015, and although the hype has somewhat abated since then, self-balancing boards are still selling like hot cakes online. While the skateboard has smart features to help you stay upright, there’s more to riding a skateboard than simply stepping on it and hoping for the best.

But don’t worry, because we at Tech Advisor have been riding skateboards for over two years, and here’s our advice on how to ride a skateboard (with extra tips!).

If you still haven’t picked up a touchpad, check out our pick of the best hoverboards of 2017/2018.

Step 1. Stand on the hover pad

Before you attempt to stand on the touchpad, make sure it is both fully charged and powered on. Don’t try to stand on the touchpad when it’s off like you will dropped almost instantly. Turn on the hoverboard (most have a silver button on the back of the board) and, if your hoverboard offers it, choose a beginner-friendly riding mode.

Start by placing one foot on the skateboard, using your foot to hold the skateboard in an upright, flat position. When you’re balanced and ready, lift your other foot off the ground and step onto the hoverboard. Try not to overthink it – it’s a movement similar to walking up the stairs.

Try to place your feet as far away from the surface of the trackpad as possible while still feeling comfortable, as a wide stance and bent knees help with stability.

The beauty of most hoverboards is that they are designed to electronically balance as you step on, but you can still wobble a little when you find your center of gravity. If you’re worried about balancing, try using a hoverboard near a wall or something to hold on to if you lose your balance.

Step 2. Go backward and forward

Once you can stay still on the trackpad without wobbling, it’s time to start moving forward and backward. Making a skateboard is easy, but there’s definitely a learning curve – especially when it comes to speed and braking. The movement concept is simple – you lean forward to move forward, and lean back to slow down and reverse.

Make sure you get on your knees for better speed control and remember to slow down with plenty of time – the last thing you need is to hit the obstacle and fly away!

Step 3. Rotate left and right

Rotating your touchpad is a similar process to moving back and forth – it’s all about pressure and balance. Each side of your trackpad is slightly independent of the other, allowing you to rotate each side. To turn left, push your right foot forward and to turn right, push your left foot forward.

It’s best to start with slow, gentle movements before moving on to fast spins because it’s easy to lose control while spinning. However, it will be fun once you get used to it!

Step 4. Get out of the hover panel

As with stepping on a hoverboard, there’s a knack for stepping on it without falling. The key is to make sure you step away from the hoverboard backwards instead of forward. Stepping forward puts pressure on the front of your foot, which can cause the hoverboard to shoot forward and cause you to fall.

Of course, it could be argued that the same could happen when going backwards, but it seems to be much less likely to happen when going backwards.
