iOS 14 brings a number of big improvements, from headline features like the introduction of widgets to smaller details like being able to tap your iPhone to open apps, but one of my favorites we are the ability to remove apps from the Home screen without having to delete them. That’s made possible thanks to Apple’s new App Gallery, Android’s equivalent of the App Drawer, which shows your apps as a list separate from your Home screen.
If you’re running the iOS 14 beta and want to claim your Home screen without actually deleting any of your precious apps, here’s how.
How to remove apps from the Home screen
Cleaning your Home screen is a pleasant experience, especially when you’re not actually deleting apps. After all, a segregated Home screen allows you to have a clean mind. Okay, I could have made that up, but still, it’s nice to have a spacious Home screen – especially with the addition of widgets in iOS 14.
If you’re running the iOS 14 beta and want to remove apps from the Home screen without removing them, follow these steps:
- Press and hold the app icon you want to remove from the Home screen until the context menu appears.
- Tap Remove app.
- You’ll be asked if you want to remove the app or simply delete it – tap Remove from Home screen to confirm the removal of the app.
- The app will then be removed from your Home screen, but still visible in the new Apps Gallery.
But what if you want to delete multiple apps or the entire screen at once? Thankfully, you don’t have to delete apps one by one – you can hide the entire screen instead. To do that:
- Press and hold an empty space on the Home screen until the app icons start to jiggle.
- Tap the dot icon of the Home screen page at the bottom of the screen.
- Uncheck any pages you want to hide from the Home screen.
- Click Done in the top right to apply the change.
The good news is, unlike just removing apps from the Home screen as detailed initially, you can restore pages without having to move each app back to the Home screen.
How to prevent new apps from appearing on the Home screen
So you’ve finally declared your Home screen and perfected your mix of apps and widgets, only to find new apps popping up whenever they’re installed. You can simply remove apps as they appear, which is supposed to take just a few seconds, but it’s much easier to prevent them from being added in the first place. As always, it’s an incredibly useful feature hidden in your iPhone’s Settings menu:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap Home screen.
- Under the New app download heading, tap App gallery only.
It’s as simple as that – your new apps will now only appear in the App Gallery, giving you the freedom to choose which apps appear on your Home screen. FYI: there is a Recently Added folder in the App Library that will make it easier for you to find any recently installed apps.
iOS 14 is scheduled for release later this year and is expected to arrive alongside the iPhone 12. For more on what you can do, check out our top iOS 14 tips and how to watch YouTube using picture-in-picture mode.
