Facebook Messenger is a great tool for communication, but it can also be very dangerous. Sometimes – for whatever reason – we don’t want to respond to a message right away, and we don’t want to appear rude by ignoring it.
Fear not: we’ll show you how to secretly read your Facebook messages and then reply when you’re free.
Read Facebook messages on your phone without the sender knowing
When you send a message on Facebook Messenger, you’ll see a circle with a check mark inside appear next to the text box. Then, if the recipient opens it, the icon will disappear and be replaced by that person’s icon. That’s how you know it was read.
Facebook Messenger doesn’t allow you to turn off these read receipts, but there are workarounds that can give you some control back.
The most effective way to stop read assertions is to prevent the application from connecting to the internet on its own. To do this, you can simply use Airplane or Airplane Mode. You’ll find this option in your phone’s Settings menu, or use the quick access icons that appear when you drag down from the top of the screen.
When you first get the message, don’t open the Facebook Messenger app, turn on Airplane mode instead. Then open the app and read the new message without the sender’s knowledge.
There’s no obvious way to know this was successful on your phone, but the sender will continue to just see a circle with a check mark inside to the right of the text bubble. When the inside of the circle is white, the message has been sent, and when it is gray, it has been sent.
Only when you decide that you are free to interact with the sender should you reopen the Facebook Messenger app (with Airplane Mode disabled). This circle will now be replaced with your profile picture, notifying the sender that you’ve read the message.
Read Facebook messages on your PC or laptop without the sender knowing
Even on desktop, Facebook doesn’t offer an option to turn off read receipts on Messenger. But here, you can benefit from third-party browser plugins.
If you use Chrome there are plenty of options. Open a new tab then click on the colorful square grid in the upper left corner highlighted Applicationthen click Online shop Icon.
Can not see and you’ll find a free, sophisticated extension that automatically intercepts read acknowledgments sent when you open a message.
Click Add to Chrome and the extension will install, then when you use Chrome to access Facebook Messenger you will be able to read the messages in private mode.
Firefox users can try
FB Unseen, does the same job. To install it, open a new tab in Firefox, click on the three lines in the top right corner then select Add-ons from the menu that appears. Now search for the app and click Add to Firefox button.
It is done. The words Facebook and privacy seem at odds with each other, but at least using these tips you can get an arbitrarily small amount back in Messenger.
