Transferring your documents, spreadsheets, posters, and other works from your PC to paper is a relatively simple affair. But, like everything in life, it’s only easy when you know how. We show you the steps to take if you want to set up a printer and use it with Windows 10.

For users still using earlier versions of Windows, we’ve also included instructions on how to set up a printer in Windows 8 and 8.1.

Set up a local printer in Windows 10

Before you can print, you need to let Windows know that there is a device that can receive your document. To set this up, first plug the printer into your PC using the included USB cable and turn it on. If all goes well, Windows should recognize it and install the appropriate driver.

If that doesn’t happen, open Start Menu and select Setting. From the window that appears, click Device then make sure that Printers & Scanners section is highlighted in the left column.

Hopefully Windows will detect your device. If that’s the case, click its name and follow the instructions that appear to complete the setup.

If the printer name doesn’t appear, you probably need a specific driver or software. To find these, visit the manufacturer’s website and search for your printer model. This will give you a link to the download you requested.

Install it and follow the on-screen instructions. Usually, you leave the USB cable disconnected until instructed to plug it in.

Set up a wireless printer

USB cables are pretty outdated when it comes to printers, and most modern models come with Wi-Fi. You will need to follow any instructions that came with the printer, as they vary too much to give anything specific here. Generally, this involves using the screen on the printer itself to identify your home Wi-Fi network, and then enter the password.

Then you can follow the steps listed above in Set up a local printer , because Windows will find the new device and add it. Again, you may still need to download printer model-specific software from the manufacturer’s website.

Print from Windows 10 apps

With your printer ready to roll, you can start sending things to print. Again, this can vary between apps, but the normal procedure is to go to the menu bar at the top and select File > Printselect your printer, number of copies, etc., then click Print right to buy.

Each program can set its own method for printing, but most follow some common theme. In most cases, go to File > Print, and you can print. Several similar desktop programs support CTRL + P as a shortcut – just hold those two keys together.

A final, less conventional option is to look for a print icon or button. Some software manufacturers simplify the printing process by placing a print button. You’ll tend to find that the File, Print, and Ctrl+P options also work, but the print icon might be a simpler way to do the job.

Things work a little differently than in Windows apps. In this case, you must first open the item you want to print. Then hover to the top or bottom right corner of the screen, or swipe in from the right edge of the screen if you’re using a touchscreen device. Touch Device charm, and then press Print.

Printer settings in Windows 8 and 8.1

Using either method, you should now be on the printer settings page. You will need to select a printer from the list. In most home setups, this will be your only printer. If you can’t see the printer you want or any, you may need to install your printer.

In most cases, all you have to do to set up the printer is connect it to your PC. Simply plug the USB cable from your printer into an available USB port on your PC and turn on the printer.

If you have a wireless printer that hasn’t been added to your home network, it’s a bit more complicated, and you’ll need to read the instructions that came with the printer to learn how to add it.

If you are unsure about any of these, you can check by going to Setting seduction and choice Change computer settings. Option PCs and devicesAnd after that Device. Your printer should appear under Printers. If it’s not there, you need to follow the steps outlined above to install it.

Select paper type, page layout, print orientation, and other output settings. When you’re satisfied, click Print.
