How to Play PS2 and PS3 Games Using PlayStation Now

While PlayStation Now doesn’t come with proper backwards compatibility, it does allow players to stream and download a library of older and new PlayStation games over the internet.

Sony’s PlayStation Now subscription gives gamers access to a library of PS2, PS3 and PS4 games that are available almost instantly thanks to streaming. In fact, Sony claims that there are over 700 titles to choose from.

Streaming gameplay offers benefits including no initial download and synced progress between consoles, so it might appeal to some. As mentioned above, the service also allows you to download games for offline use – ideal for those with slower internet connections that can’t handle streaming.

Why doesn’t PS5 have backwards compatibility?

Unlike Sony, Microsoft offers Xbox One backwards compatibility for nearly 500 Xbox 360 and more recent Xbox Series X&S titles that can play games from every Xbox ever released. Even Sony’s PS5 offers backwards compatibility for the PlayStation 4 – though not for anything older. So why wasn’t it included in the PS4?

Sony’s Jim Ryan said in an interview in June 2017 that while backward compatibility is much requested by gamers, it’s actually not used very often.

“When we tried backwards compatibility, I would say it’s one of those features that were requested a lot, but didn’t really get much use,” Ryan told Time. “That, and I attended a Gran Turismo event recently, where they had PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games, and PS1 and PS2 games, they looked so antiquated, like why would anyone. play this game?”
