How to log out of Messenger: Stop Facebook saying you’re online

Messenger, Facebook’s private messaging app, makes it easy to stay in touch via text, video chat, or group chat. But if you want to sign out when you’re done catching up, or have your ID working on a device you don’t have with you, it can be a bit tricky to locate the relevant settings.

Facebook Messenger can also be a troublemaker, pretending you’re online when you’re not. It doesn’t take too much imagination to understand how this can lead to some arguments between friends.

Here’s how to properly sign out of Facebook Messenger on your device.

Sign out of Messenger on mobile

While it seems perfectly reasonable to expect the sign out setting to be present in the Messenger app on your smartphone or tablet, it’s not. Instead, you’ll need to access the Facebook app itself.

To find the sign out option, open the Facebook app, then tap the three-line icon (in the bottom right corner on iOS or the top right corner on Android).

Option Settings > Security and Login.

You will now find, under the heading Where you logged in, a list of currently active devices and locations. Below each device’s name, you’ll see you’re signed in to the Facebook App or Messenger.

Find the device you want to remove, and if it’s not listed as the two most recent, just tap See it all right to buy.

Find the last Messenger entry and tap the three dots to the right of its name. This will open a dialog from which you can tap Log out to close the session.
