Wireless networking is a must in the 21st century, but not all computers come with a wireless network card pre-installed. We’ll show you how to install a wireless network card on your PC – it’s an instant process and shouldn’t take more than 10-15 minutes.
If you’re looking for something a little more versatile, you can use a USB dongle to provide wireless Internet to your PC or laptop.
How to install wireless network card
It should be noted that the setup process may vary slightly depending on the Wi-Fi network card you use. Make sure you go through the individual instructions that came with your card, but having said that, it should just be a standard PCI-E installation so there shouldn’t be too much of a difference.
Step 1) Turn off your computer. This may seem like a no-brainer to some, but you can seriously damage your computer’s internals (and yourself!) if you try to install components with active power. motion. It’s best to completely unplug your computer from the power source while doing this.
Step 2) Open the case. Now, it’s worth noting that the way you open the case is a little different for each computer, although most cases will have a removable panel on the side. In our case we had to remove two screws from the back of the case and then the side panel would slide out. If you can’t see any screws, check for a lever that can be used to unscrew the side of the case. If in any doubt about how to remove the case, don’t force it – just check your computer’s manual for exact instructions.
Step 3) Identify an empty position. The PCI-E slots should look similar to the ones shown in the photo above and should align with the removable metal plates on the back of the PC.
Step 4) Remove the metal plate. Before we can add a wireless network card, we must create space for it. Many computers come with removable panels, and these are easily removed by removing the screw that holds it in place. There are usually one or two screws to hold in place, or in some cases plastic clips that need to be pulled back. Again, if you’re not sure, just check your computer’s manual.
Step 5) Align the wireless network card with the PCI-E slot. To install the wireless network card, hold it by its faceplate, making sure that the chips are facing the bottom of the box.
If your computer is running slow, there are a few things you can do to speed it up.
Step 6) Push the card straight into the PCI-E slot. Once you’ve aligned the wireless network card with the slot, simply push the card straight into the slot until it’s in place and the faceplate is face down into the hole on the back of your PC.
Step 7) Secure the card to the box with screws. Using the screw previously opened when removing the metal plate, screw the wireless network card into place in the box.
Step 8) Remove the yellow cover and attach the antenna. Simply pull the yellow caps on the back of the wireless network card and screw in the two included antennas.
Step 9) Close the computer case and turn on the computer. After you have installed the card, close the computer box and turn on your PC.
Your new wireless card will automatically install the necessary drivers for its components, as this functionality is built directly into Windows 10.
