Audible is Amazon’s online platform dedicated to Audiobooks. If you find that you don’t have time to sit down and read, it’s a great way to hear the best of fiction and non-fiction while doing other things or on your way to work, especially when you’re on the go. The world begins to open up. back up after locking the device.
Much like the online Kindle store, it allows you to buy thousands of audiobooks and listen to them on a variety of devices.
There are several ways you can get the service for cheap or completely for free. Here’s how to do it.
Sign up for a 30-day Audible free trial
If you’re new to the service, the obvious option is to sign up for a 30-day free trial.
To do so, you just need an Amazon account that you use to sign up for Audible. Then you will be able to experience it for free for a month. The trial also lets you download your first two books for free, choosing from hundreds of thousands of available options, with no price limits.
After the 30-day trial period has passed, you will be charged £7.99 / US$14.95 a month, or you can simply cancel the trial before the end date. Despite the cancellation, you may still have access to all the books you downloaded during the trial period.
Subscribing to Audible grants you one credit per month. Credits can be used to purchase audiobooks, where each credit is valid for a one-volume audiobook at any price.
Note that the US has two Audible memberships: Audible Plus ($7.95 per month) and Audible Premium Plus ($14.95 per month). You can get a free trial for either tier.
While the Plus membership lets you listen to the Audible catalog and podcasts, it doesn’t offer monthly credits for buying audiobooks – but Premium Plus does. Premium Plus also gives customers access to 30% off additional titles and access to discounts.
The UK’s Audible membership is a bit more extensive. It’s actually a Premium Plus subscription but with a discount of up to 80% for £7.99.

Most audiobooks cost more than £7.99 / US$14.95, so you still save money. Note that if you want to buy more books, you’ll have to pay extra (most audiobooks seem to cost around £20 / US$20).
You can even extend the 30-day trial to 60 days if you own an Amazon Echo. See how here.
Get Audible for half price (£3.99)
Sadly Amazon has canceled the 90-day free trial for Amazon Prime members, but Amazon sometimes rolls out promotions that drop the price of the subscription down to £3.99 for three or four months. . Keep an eye out for such promotions around Prime Day, Amazon’s biggest sale of the year. It’s not free, but it’s better to pay the full amount.
While this isn’t guaranteed to work, you may also be eligible for a three-month membership discount if you’re about to cancel.
Make sure to use up all the credit you have in your account and then go to the Audible desktop website. When you’re about to cancel, you might see Audible ask why you’re canceling. If you select the ‘It’s too expensive’ option, you can get additional credits for buying audiobooks or halving your membership for three months. Again, this option may not always appear. This process can cancel your membership altogether, which is why it’s important to use up your credits before trying.
Sign up for member transactions
Once you’re an Audible member, you can also sign up to receive exclusive daily deals. Sign in to your Audible account > Click Email Options in the left menu > Select Audible Daily Deals.
With this notice selected, you can purchase Audiobooks for as low as £1.99 or two books for the price of one.
How to access Audible
Once you’ve signed up for Audible, you can access your Library on multiple devices, on iOS, Android, and of course on Kindle and Echo devices.
Access audio on your phone
To use Audible on your smartphone or tablet, simply download the free Audible app (for iOS and Android). Sign in with your Amazon or Amazon Prime account and download the audiobook from the ‘Browse’ section of the app, or use the search bar to find a specific title. Then press ‘Buy Now’ to enjoy your purchase.
To access your library on your Mac or PC, you’ll also need to sign in with your Amazon account. You can listen from your Online Library just by pressing play in the cloud player. Alternatively, you can download the file (you may need to download the Listenable Manager first) for offline listening.
On Amazon Echo
Audible also works great with the Amazon Echo (read more here). To use Audible via an Echo device, go to your library from the Echo and make sure it’s turned on and that you’re signed in to your Amazon account. Then just ask Alexa to play your audiobook.
You can control your listening experience by asking Alexa to ‘pause’, ‘resume’, ‘resume’ or ‘skip a chapter’ (see all Alexa commands for Audible). Members who can listen with Echo devices can also purchase books with credit via voice commands.
