How to Get Android Apps on Amazon Fire Tablet

Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets (just Fire tablets these days) are some of the best value Android tablets you can buy, from just £49.99, buy them without running Google apps, this can help you get your favorite apps on them tricky. As always, there’s a workaround and if you’re running Fire OS 5.3.1.1 or later it’s actually pretty simple and anyone can do it.

To install apps from outside the Amazon Appstore, you have two options: ‘download’ the APK file that you download from the internet (riskier); or install Google Services (recommended, safer option).

Now, as you will discover, even that second option involves installing Google Play and Google Services by downloading the APK file from the web, but then you can download the app directly from the relatively safe limits of the Google Play Store.

We will explain how to do both in this article.

How to get Android apps on your Amazon Fire tablet

Before you can install any apps on your Kindle Fire, you must give it permission to install software from outside the Kindle Store. You can do this by launching the Settings app and selecting Security & Privacy, then turning on the switch next to Apps from Unknown Sources. A warning message will pop up – click Ok to continue.

From here you can launch Silk Browser then search for ‘[App name] APK’ with the URL bar. For example here we are using ‘Words With Friends 2’ APK. You’ll see several options in the results, but we recommend searching for an appropriate app directory, such as APKPure.

Click the listing in the search results, then scroll down the page to find the ‘Download APK’ button. You will be prompted to provide access to Silk Browser’s storage to download the file, so click Continue in this pop-up then click Allow when it asks to access photos, media and files on your device.

Look to the bottom of the screen for a new window that will essentially ask you if you really want to download this file, warning you that this type of file could harm your device. If you’re sure it’s from a legitimate source, click Ok.

Once the file is downloaded, you will again see a pop-up at the bottom of the screen prompting you to Open the file. If you missed this message, you can also tap the three-line icon at the top left of the Silk Browser and select Download and you’ll be able to open the file from this list.

Click Install to begin installing the APK file, and when it’s done, click Done or Open. You will then find the app shortcut on the home screen as if it had been installed through the Kindle Store. It’ll be at the bottom of the list, but you can tap, hold, and drag the apps to rearrange them.

How to install Google Play and Google Services on an Amazon Fire tablet

The app in our example above, Words With Friends 2, works fine when transferred to a Kindle Fire tablet. However, some apps won’t work unless you also install Google Play. The Ring Doorbell app is one such example, which seems crazy considering Amazon owns both Fire and Ring tablets, so you can expect to be able to operate one from the other. The only solution here is to install Google Services.

To get Google Play and Google Services running on your Kindle Fire, you will need to follow the process we outlined above to get the required APKs on your device.

You will need to download and install the following APKs in exactly this order:

  1. Google Account Manager

  2. Platform of Google services

  3. Google Play Services

  4. Google Play Store

Once you have all four installed, tap on the Google Play Store icon that has been added to your home screen. You’ll be prompted to sign in to your Google account, and then you can use your Kindle Fire as you would any other Android tablet.

Google apps are always up to date, which means you may see a warning that a newer version is available when you download the APK files above. However, once you’re signed in to Google, you can easily update all your apps through the Play Store.

Scroll down from the top of the screen and you may see a message prompting you to Update Google Play services. Tap this notification and it will show the required page on Play Store, then you just need to click Update. You should now see that you can install and use any Android app on your Kindle Fire.
