How To Get Adobe Photoshop On Android

Adobe Photoshop is one of the most famous editing applications of all time. It offers a host of photo editing features that you won’t find elsewhere, especially when bundled with a Creative Cloud subscription.

However, the full version of Photoshop is one of the more demanding applications, as shown in the fact that it is only available on desktop operating systems and iPadOS.

But what if you want you to use Photoshop on another Android phone or device? Fortunately, Adobe has created a stripped-down version for mobile devices, called Photoshop Express.

What is Photoshop Express?

Simply put, it’s Adobe’s version of Photoshop specifically for phones and other mobile devices. As well as being optimized for touch input, it’s geared towards sharing the images you’ve just created online.

This isn’t just a quick edit for Instagram, though – Photoshop Express has a ton of tools that make it a powerful photo editing app in your pocket.

How to get started with Photoshop Express

  1. On your Android device, open the Google Play Store
  2. Search for ‘Photoshop’ and tap ‘Photoshop Express Photo Editor’. It is usually the first result
  3. Tap ‘Install’ then open the app once done
  4. When you open the application for the first time, you will be presented with an overview of the main features of Photoshop Express. Press ‘Next’ 10 times to go to the next section
  5. If you already have an Adobe ID, use it to sign in on the next screen. Otherwise, use your Google or Facebook account to log in
  6. Tap ‘Continue’ to accept cookie settings, then ‘OK’ and ‘Allow’ to give the app permission to access your files and photos

Setting up Photoshop Express

You should now see all your photos displayed as a grid. This is what you will be presented every time you open the app from now on.

Is Photoshop Express free?

As you’ve seen by following the steps above, it costs nothing to download the app and sign in with your details. Indeed, most of the features you’ll find on Photoshop Express are completely free to use. These cover all the basics you would expect from photo editing software:

  • Apply filters
  • Crop photo
  • Resize photo
  • Editing angle
  • Adjust exposure, contrast, hue, saturation, clarity, highlights and many more elements of your photo
  • Add text
  • Fix red eye
  • Add border
  • Remove blemishes like spots, stains or dust
  • Auto Boost
  • Add watermark
  • Lens correction

However, there are some additional functions that you will have to pay for:

  • Advanced Healing – this allows you to quickly remove or duplicate part of an image, which can be used to smooth out imperfections where the photo looks artificial
  • Selective editing – this allows you to separate a specific part of the image (such as the subject in the foreground) and edit it independently of the rest of the image
  • Raw photo editing – as the name suggests, you can also edit in Raw mode, which preserves details with minimal processing after taking the photo

Other Premium exclusives include integration with Creative Cloud (if you have an existing subscription) and cloud storage. Adobe also touts ‘more innovative features’, but it’s unclear exactly what these are. If none of the above appeals to you, the free plan is probably enough.

How much does Photoshop Express Premium cost?

Still, the Premium subscription might be worth it for you, especially since it’s much more affordable than the desktop version. After a three-day free trial, a year of Premium will cost you £26.49 / $34.99 – working out at £2.21 / $2.92 per month. It will cost you £5.99 / $4.99 for one month’s access, but there is no free trial with this plan.

On Android, the easiest way to pay is through the Google Play Store. You can cancel at any time and will only be charged until the end of that billing period.

What is the difference between Photoshop Express and the full Photoshop?

As you may have noticed, the features included in Photoshop Express do not include everything available on the desktop version of Photoshop. In the official Adobe article comparing these two versions, it highlights two main situations where the full version is needed.

The first is Layers, which allow you to make major changes to an element of an image without affecting anything else. For double exposures, composites, photographs, and some landscapes, layers are important. On a more basic level, that’s what we use to drop screenshots into laptop models for multiple images on the web. Photoshop Express’s Selective Editing feature doesn’t offer the same level of control.

Its other major advantage is what Adobe calls Interoperability. Essentially, the desktop version of Photoshop can pull information seamlessly from other Creative Cloud apps, be it a background for a Premiere Pro video or a magazine palette from InDesign. That is simply not possible on mobile devices.

While Photoshop Express is designed for smartphone photography, you can easily import edits into Photoshop or main Lightroom for further editing.
