How to Find People on Facebook: Track Down Old Friends

Facebook has been hard at work introducing new features like Stories and Reactions, but one of the most basic needs on the platform is an easy way to find people. Thankfully, there are several methods that can be used in finding your first companions, many of which are right at your fingertips.

How to use Find Friends

One of the most comprehensive ways to search on Facebook is to use the Friend Search feature. To access this open Facebook on your PC and click on the silhouette two people icon that you will see in the upper right corner.

When the drop-down menu appears, you’ll see a Find Friends option appear directly below where you clicked. Select this option and you’ll be taken to a new page that lists some people Facebook thinks you might know. Obviously this should be looked at, as Facebook uses its algorithmic magic to try and match users.

On the right side of the page, you’ll also find a Find Friends section. This allows you to not only search for someone by name, but also includes options for home city, school, college, university, mutual friends, and employers.

Just fill in the details related to the person you are looking for and hopefully you will get the right results.

Search friends of your friends

If the person you’re trying to find is also known to some of your other contacts, go through their friends list to see if they’ve followed them.

To do this, go to your existing contact’s profile and click or tap the Friends option found below their profile picture. You’ll now be able to scroll through all the people they’re friends with and maybe run into your ex-partner again.

Searching for old schools and workplaces

When you sign up for Facebook for the first time and continuously thereafter, you will be asked to enter the school, college, university or company that you attended/worked before. It’s reasonable to assume that the person you’re looking for does the same, so the pages of these organizations are a rich hunting ground.

Try searching for your old organizations by typing their names in the search bar at the top of the page.

If you’ve been keeping in touch with your absent friend for some time after school or work, it’s likely you’ve exchanged emails at some point. Facebook has a feature where it will search for your email address and then flag any person on the social media platform that hasn’t connected with you yet.

To enable this feature, go to the Find Requests section (the silhouettes of the two again), click Find Friends, then from the box in the upper right corner called Add Personal Contacts, select the email service you want Facebook search. Enter your account details then click the Find Friends button and with luck you might see their name appear.
