Almost a month after the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, Red Dead Online is now available in beta form. That is a good news. The bad news? The release is multiple – but you can learn more about that in our Red Dead Online release date explanation. Once you’re online, you’ll quickly realize that certain features aren’t present, including trains. So, how do you quickly travel in the vast world of Red Dead Online?
Although it is not explained in the online game mode guide, there are two ways to fast travel in Red Dead Online. Here’s how to do it.
Don’t have a copy of RDR2 yet? We have the best Red Dead Redemption 2 deals right here.
Although trains do not appear in Red Dead Online, you can still use carriages to quickly move around the large map. Prices are a bit cheaper than in Red Dead Redemption 2, making it a bit easier to find your Possessions if they’re on the other side of the map. To use the carriage, go to the nearest icon that looks like a signpost and interact with the split wheel with a skull on it.
You’ll be taken to a menu full of places to quickly go to, with only one exception – your camp. We’ll explain why below.
The main menu
Another way to move fast in Red Dead Online, surprisingly, is to use the main menu. This is a stark departure from the authentic fast-travel options found in Red Dead Redemption 2, which force you to take a train or carriage to travel quickly around the massive open world.
However, it is not as simple as the main game. You can go to the main menu, go Online, and choose one of the free-roaming options to move quickly around the map, from the snowy peaks of Ambarino to the swamps and Lemoyne bay – but there are a few condition.
The first is that you can’t select a specific location in an area, only the region itself, and second, a quick move will take you out of your current game lobby. We’re not sure if there’s a glitch later on (the game is in beta, of course at the moment), so we’ll be monitoring it in the coming days for any changes.
While Red Dead Online only has to use similar trains to travel fast on the network, you maybe still quickly get to and from your camp. However, with many elements of Red Dead Online, you must have a certain rank to unlock it. That rank? 65, so you’ll have to if you don’t have it completely for a while and appreciate the open world complexity that Rockstar has created.
Once you reach Rank 65, just head back to your camp and approach the good Cripps.
From the Wilderness Outfitters menu, select Camp, then Equipment.
From here, you’ll be able to unlock a quick travel station at your camp, allowing you to instantly travel to multiple locations – both towns and other points of interest – in the online world. It should be noted that like with the main game, this is one-way and you’ll have to take the journey back to camp into account when contemplating long-distance travel.
Oh, and you won’t be able to fast-travel to your camp from the carriage until you unlock the fast-travel point, so don’t assume you’ll get a carriage home after your long ride.
It’s a much better way to get around the map than the main menu system, but you have to work for it first.
