How to face swap in Snapchat: Swap Faces with Friends & Pictures

Face-swapping is a Snapchat phenomenon that is both disruptive and fascinating. Even if you keep the results to yourself, it’s an experiment you really must try – if only for the chuckles. See also: Snapchat phone rumors and Snapchat Spectacles review.

First things first, if you’re completely new to Snapchat, our full Snapchat user guide might be more helpful, as it walks you through every element of the app. Here, we’re only talking about face swapping. If you’re looking to swap faces, keep reading!

Get Started with Face Swap on Snapchat

• Open Snapchat in Selfie mode

• Long press on your face until a white grid appears

• Scroll through the options next to the shutter button to find Face Swap

• Line up two faces as shown on the screen

First, you’ll need to launch Snapchat (if you haven’t already, you can download it from the iOS App Store or the Google Play Store) and make sure you’re on the camera screen. Now swap the camera so it’s facing you. You will be able to see your lovely face on the screen.

Enable Snapchat Lens

Now tap your face until you see a grid on your face. It’s Snapchat that maps your face, and that’s how the lenses look so realistic (and creepy).

You can now swipe through the lens options that appear at the bottom of the screen. The face swap is a yellow icon with two smileys inside. You should now see two smileys appear on the main part of the screen.

Go to Face Swap

Align your face

Take a friend or family member with whom you want to face swap and align both of your faces with the icons on the screen until both are yellow.

We’ve found that it’s most successful if you remove your glasses and if you’re facing the camera directly.

Working? Snapchat uses your face map to adjust other people’s faces to fit yours, and that means when you talk, their face moves over your body… get it ? It’s horrifying and weird, but totally engaging and it’ll make you laugh uncontrollably (like Lewis and Christina below).

But you’ll want to capture that image to share with your friends. Tap the circle at the bottom with the face swap icon to take a photo, and if you want to save it to your phone’s photo gallery, you’ll need to tap the icon in the bottom left corner that looks like an arrow downwards.

You can also send it to your Snapchat friends as usual.

With that image saved in your photo library, you can share it anywhere, whether it’s via email, on Facebook, on Twitter, or anywhere else.

Using Snapchat’s Solo Face Swap Lens

The popularity of Snapchat’s original face-swapping lenses doesn’t seem to be slowing down, so the developers added an extra face-swapping option that means you can even join the fun. when you are alone.

Instead, the face-swapping lens alone will swap your face with a face from your phone’s photo gallery. Scroll to the purple face swap icon after launching the Snapchat app and tap and hold on your face to bring up the lens options. If you don’t see the purple face swap icon, you may need to update your Snapchat app.

You’ll see a pop-up appear, and gradually but surely, Snapchat will pick out the faces it finds in your photo library that are ready for you to swap. You can scroll through them until you find the one you want to try and tap on it to see the magic results.

Frustratingly, you can’t manually select photos from your photo library – Snapchat intelligently searches for faces by itself, but that means some don’t show up if it makes a mistake.

Alternatives to Snapchat for Face Swapping

While using Snapchat to swap faces is fun, not everyone uses the popular messaging app and therefore doesn’t have access to the feature. Don’t be discouraged, though, as the ability to swap faces with friends and family isn’t a unique feature of Snapchat and is available across many other apps.

The most popular app that currently offers face swapping is MSQRD, which made headlines when it was acquired by Facebook less than three months after its launch.

The app, which is available for free on both iOS and Android devices, offers not only the ability to swap faces, but other effects similar to those used by Snapchat.

Choose to include a specific effect that will make you look like Donald Trump (horror!) And like Snapchat, these effects will change over time to keep things interesting.

It works in a similar way to Snapchat’s face-swapping feature, recognizing your face and automatically applying different effects when selected.

If MSQRD isn’t an appealing option for you, at least for iOS users, Face Swap Live (and its free version) is another good option.

Face Swap Live offers similar functionality to both Snapchat and MSQRD while bringing something a little different to the table.

In addition to being able to take/record a face swap selfie and apply some (definitely funny) filters to your face, Face Swap Live also offers the ability to stitch your face onto a photo .

This means you can even add your face to Donald Trump’s photos (with disturbing results) or pretend to be a baby – your imagination is the limit.

Unfortunately, there is no Android variant available at the time of writing, but it is currently in development and those interested can sign up to be notified when it launches on the Face Swap Live website.
