How to Download YouTube Video on a Laptop, Phone or Tablet

As the second most visited website on the internet – after Google itself – YouTube has about 23 billion unique visitors each month. Most of them watch videos on the website or through one of the many YouTube apps.

However, sometimes you will want to download a video. Maybe it’s to watch it offline, or perhaps you want to save a useful video in case it gets taken down. Whatever your reason, we’ll explain a few different ways you can do this. It is possible – and easy – to download videos to your Windows laptop or PC, and on your Android phone. It’s not as easy as it is on the iPhone, unless you pay for YouTube Premium, but it’s totally doable if you’re determined.

Remember that watching videos in the YouTube app (or website) and without skipping ads is the best way to support your favorite channels.

There are two official ways to download videos from YouTube. First, there’s the YouTube Go app available in countries where mobile data is too expensive to stream them.

Then there’s YouTube Premium, a paid service that allows users in other countries – including the UK and US – to download YouTube content within the app. There are also other benefits of Premium, such as no ads and being able to listen to music in the background so you can use other apps on your phone.

YouTube Premium isn’t cheap at £11.99 / $11.99 per month, and if you just want to download an occasional clip it’s probably too much to justify paying.

The good news is that it is very easy to download YouTube videos using unofficial methods. First, we recommend you read our guide on whether downloading YouTube videos is legal or not.

Download videos with YouTube Premium

If you’re a YouTube Premium subscriber, downloading videos is easy. There’s one big caveat, though: you can only do that using the official YouTube or YouTube Gaming app, which means you can’t use Premium to download videos to your computer – just to your phone or tablet. tablet.

To download, just open the app and go to the video you want to download. Below the player you’ll see a ‘Download’ icon – tap that, select the video quality you want to download and that’s it.

Once the video is downloaded, the icon below will turn into a blue checkmark – tap it if you want to remove the download. You will be able to find all your downloaded videos in the Library or Account tab.

Download YouTube videos in Windows

As with the websites, there are plenty of options for downloading using the desktop app. Not all are free, but some are. One paid program that we can recommend is ByClick Downloader. It has an easy-to-use interface, is regularly updated, and makes downloading video – or just audio – from YouTube super easy.

All you have to do is copy the video’s URL and a pop-up will ask if you want to download the audio or video. Or you can set the default and it won’t even ask: it will automatically download MP3 or MP4 at default quality.

It’s reasonably priced at $9.99 (about £7.40) and you can try it for free for 24 hours without entering any payment details.

There are plenty of alternatives, but none that we’ve found to be good.

These include iTubeGo, which offers a basic interface but can download playlists and 4K videos. However, it is more expensive at $29.95.

If you want a free option, try WinX YouTube Downloader. This will cost you an upgrade to the full version that includes conversion to other formats (including MP3), but if you can use them, it won’t cost you anything.

How to download YouTube videos

The process is almost the same as using a website: you copy and paste the video’s URL into the app. Then you choose any option such as resolution to download then hit the Download button. Most apps allow you to create playlists of videos and then download them once. Some even let you paste in a YouTube playlist and automatically download all the videos.

Download YouTube videos in web browser

If you want to save a video without installing an app, there are many websites where you can paste the URL of a YouTube video and then click on the resolution you want to download. These sites are often shut down because they are regularly bombarded with cease and desist notices from copyright owners.

In addition, these sites tend to redirect you to other sites that may or may not be safe and may pose a risk to your computer. Here’s why, firstly, it’s important to run top-quality antivirus software, and second, why we don’t recommend this download method anymore.

Previous sites we used for years, such as SaveFrom, no longer work in the UK or US and even if you do find a ‘safe’ site that allows you to download video, which often has limitations.

Normally, you’ll be restricted from downloading the lower quality 720p version, even if the video is in 1080p or 4K. And not all will only download audio (e.g. from a music video).

Sometimes you will find that the videos are downloaded in WebM format. You can convert these videos to MP4 – or whatever format you like using Freemake and Any Video Converter, or you can download and install VLC, which is a free video player that can play any file any.

How to download playlists on YouTube

Sometimes you have to pay for software if you want an easy life. Again, ByClickFinder is what we would recommend.

If the video is part of a playlist, you can click the ‘Download playlist’ button and you will get a pop-up like shown below where you can select the video you want from the playlist . One click on the Download button is all you need then.

You get a free trial for the day to see if you like the show, but after that, you’ll have to pay $9.99.

How to download music from YouTube?

Sometimes you may just want to download audio from YouTube videos. The easiest way to do this is to use one of the methods above and choose MP3 (or whatever audio format is provided). This way you will only download the audio track without any video footage. That’s ideal if you just want to download some music or audio from a YouTube podcast without having to have YouTube open and running on your phone as you listen.

You can listen to YouTube in the background with this solution for iPhone and a separate solution for Android phones.

If you don’t mind paying, you can also download music as part of YouTube Music Premium, for $9.99/$9.99 per month. It will let you download songs and even music videos, but limited to music only – you won’t be able to download other videos with a YouTube Premium subscription.

There’s the official YouTube Premium service we mentioned, but there are other apps that let you download videos directly on your Android phone (including free), but it’s more complicated on the iPhone. We have written separate instructions for both types of devices:

But don’t forget you can also download videos to your laptop using the methods above, then transfer them to your phone or tablet or upload them to a cloud storage service where you can access them. videos on any device.
