How to Change your Facebook Password

Just last week, Facebook made the news after taking steps to protect the 50 million accounts affected following a data breach. If your account is affected, you will automatically be signed out of the service and asked to log back in.

Now with a new week comes a new scam, except this time in a strange series of events, no one has actually been hacked – they just think they have.

Users are spreading this or a similar message: “Warning!! Almost every account is being cloned. Your picture and your name are used to create a new facebook account (they don’t need your password to do this). They want your friends to add them to their Facebook account. Your friends will think it’s you and accept your request. From there they can write what they want under your name. I do NOT plan to open a new account. Please DO NOT accept the 2nd friend request from “me”. Please go to all your contacts. Please pass it on!!! “

Whether or not your account has been *really* hacked, the best thing you can do to protect yourself is to change your password and make sure you’re signed out on any other possible devices. be logged into your account.

Here’s how to get there. (See also: How to secure Facebook.)

How to log out of Facebook on other devices

As I wrote this guide, I discovered my Facebook account was being accessed by a device in Leeds. Having not visited Yorkshire in 20 years, I checked out a good job.

Luckily, it’s very easy to sign out on any device you don’t recognize, and we recommend changing your password following the instructions above to be on the safe side.

Laptop or PC browser

Sign out of Facebook on all devices

Click the down-arrow icon at the top right of the page and select Settings, then the Security and Sign-In Tab. At the top of the page, you’ll see a section called ‘Where you’re signed in’, followed by a list of all recent sessions.

If there’s anything you don’t recognize, you can tap the three dots next to the entry and select ‘Not you’, then follow the steps to take the appropriate action. This includes changing your password and checking for any recent updates on your profile, new comments, and new liked pages to make sure they’re really you.

Or, scroll to the bottom of the list and select ‘Sign out of all sessions’.

Android

Check devices logged in Facebook for Android

The process is almost identical on the Facebook app for Android: tap the three-line icon in the top right and select Settings and Privacy > Settings > Security and Sign In. At the top of the page is the ‘Where you’re signed in’ section – click See more below this for the full list. You can take appropriate action on individual results by tapping the three dots next to the entry and selecting ‘Not you’ or scrolling to the bottom and selecting ‘Sign out of all sessions ‘.

iPhone or iPad

Check Facebook for iOS logged in device

The only difference here between the iOS and Android mobile apps (above) is that you access the settings using the three-line icon at the bottom right, not the top right. Then the process is the same, so select Settings and Privacy > Settings > Security and Login > Where You’re Logged In > See More > Sign Out of All Sessions.
