Spotify Premium offers a very generous three-month trial for new users, allowing unlimited access to ad-free tunes and podcasts from around the globe, plus the ability to listen offline and skip unlimited pass. After those months are up, your card will be charged up to £9.99 / US$9.99 per month.
If for some reason you’re not willing to drop 10ner per month on the service, our guide will show you how to cancel so you don’t have to pay a dime.
How to cancel Spotify
Here are the basic steps to cancel Spotify Premium. Here are details and screenshots to help guide you through the process.
- Log in and click ‘Account’
- Click ‘Change plan’
- In the ‘Spotify Free’ section, click ‘Cancel Premium’
- Confirm by clicking ‘Yes, Cancel’
The first step is to visit Spotify’s website in a web browser, as you can’t cancel your account from within the app. Also, if you signed up through a third-party provider like iTunes or through your broadband provider, you’ll have to talk to them directly to cancel.
Next, make sure you’re signed in to Spotify. From the home page, go to the top right corner where the profile button (with the head icon) is located. Hover over this section and click ‘Account’.
From here, you will get to the account dashboard. Scroll down until you get to the card titled ‘Your Plan’ and click ‘Change Plan’. Alternatively, you can also access the next page by clicking on ‘Available Packages’ on the left side.
This page will take you to all the plans available on Spotify. Keep scrolling until you find a purple card titled ‘Spotify Free’. Click ‘Cancel Premium’ in the bottom right corner of the card.
To confirm your choice, click ‘Yes, cancel’.
The next screen will show confirmation of your cancellation, along with an optional feedback section about your decision. You will also receive an email with a receipt confirming the amount you paid (if you cancel before the free trial period ends, it will be £0.00 / US$0.00) to save in your profile.
Important things to note: Canceling a subscription before the free trial period expires will not terminate your access to Spotify Premium. I signed up on January 30, 2020 and got canceled immediately and as you can see below, the trial continues for three months.
After switching to Spotify Free, you can still listen to Spotify’s library. However, you will only be able to play music in ad-free shuffle mode. You can always reactivate your Premium subscription or check out other plans like Spotify Family or Spotify with Headspace.
