Can You Evolve Your Pikachu or Eevee in Pokémon Let’s Go?

Pokémon Let’s Go is the epic launch of the Pokémon series not only on Switch, but on any home console – in addition to all the different spin-offs, of course. Anyone else remember Pokemon Snap on N64?

The Let’s Go! The game harks back to one of the oldest Pokémon games, bringing the spirit of the Game Boy’s Pokémon Yellow to the modern day by allowing you to choose between Pikachu or Eevee to follow you across the game map.

Your relationship with Pikachu or Eeevee (depending on which version of the game you have) is different from your relationship with any other Pokémon: they not only sit on you as you move through the game, but also automatically have a closer bond, learning special techniques and being able to style their fur and wear different outfits.

However, there is one thing they cannot do: grow.

Yes, that’s right, just like in Pokémon Yellow, you can’t evolve your chosen creature at all. Normally, Pikachu evolves into Raichu, and Eevee can be evolved into Flareon, Jolteon, or Vaporeon, depending on the elemental evolution stone you use.

However, if you try that in Pokémon Let’s Go, you won’t have much luck. Use an appropriate evolution stone on your Pikachu or Eevee and the game will tell you it doesn’t like it, refusing to evolve – just like Pikachu did in the cartoons back in the day. That means you’re stuck with the cute, unresolvable shape whether you like it or not (though they’re adorable but how could you not?).

Can you still get Raichu, Flareon, Jolteon and Vaporeon?

Fear not, it’s easy to get any evolved Pokémon. Not only can you get them from trading, but you can also catch both Pikachu and Eevee in the wild, and these wild forms of Pokémon can be evolved just like you normally would.

You’ll just need to get hold of the appropriate evolution stone – either in the wild or from the Celadon City department store – and use it on a regular Eevee or Pikachu to force it to evolve just like you’d expect it to.
